I was working in the kitchen today, preparing my meals for the next few days and it occurred to me that what I was doing was rather unusual in this day and age.  I had mentioned it in one of my previous blog posts and wanted to expand on it.  I’m not talking about the actual act of preparing the meals instead of going out to eat or even the whole foods style of cooking.  I’m talking about the reason behind why I had chosen and was preparing these particular foods.

I thought I’d put a list of the resources together that played a role in my recovery in hopes that they might help someone else.  Some were calming and comforting, some were brain fodder that gave me something to think about when I couldn’t be reading and thus kept me from going to dark places, and some were purely out of interest.

Apparently some antibiotics can have an immediate and/or delayed effect on the body. Neurological issues, tendon tears, muscle and joint problems, to name a few. I didn’t know this before I took them.  I found out afterward, the hard way.  About two weeks after the c-diff fiasco (or so I thought it was the end), I woke up one morning with a sore shoulder and figured I’d slept wrong.  I tried to stretch it out but over the next week it got worse.  Painful.

Let me tell you about c-diff. C-diff is short for Clostridium difficile. It is a bacteria that can live in our colons along with lots of other bacteria. It is difficult to kill and can live on surfaces for months. It’s also resistant to most antibiotics. So when you take an antibiotic and start killing off the other bacteria that normally destroy c-diff, c-diff will flourish. And flourish it does. Although flourish isn’t exactly the term I would have used to describe day 10.

During my 8 weeks off of work, things got….different.  While I didn’t have any more “attacks” that put me completely off food for weeks, I developed new and different gut symptoms that limited how much I could eat.  Putting anything through my system caused what felt like major throbbing.  It started in my gut and would intensify until it felt like my entire body was throbbing and then slowly die down over several hours until I ate or drank something again. And it didn't matter what food it was.
